Programmes

Practical courses are offered as half hour to hour weekly classes. All students enrolled in practical courses are encouraged to take exams from ABRSM after completion of the course. Students are also encouraged to attend special courses and or band/orchestra in collaboration with a practical course.

General

Course AiM - Adventure in Music - No pre-requisite required

This is a great introduction class, one that a child can attend from 3 to 7 years. It is a 60-minute course that meets once a week. The course has 2 levels; if your child has never taken this course they will be placed in level 1. Each child participates at his or her own level. Some focus points of the course are: Rhythm and time, Melody, Voice. Enrolment for this course is offered in September only.

Note: Music in Action is the next recommended course, but the child must be in primary school to attend this course.

Course MiA - Music in Action (Theory) - No prerequisite required for level 1

This course is separated into two levels. A student must complete the first level before advancing to the next level. Meeting weekly for 60-minute class geared to the interests and social nature of primary age students. It aims to reinforce basic theoretical concepts through creative group music-making activities. The course focuses on structured work in rhythm and tonality. Enrolment for this course is offered in September only.

Piano

Course - A101- Elementary Piano (Grade 1-3) - No prerequisite

For beginners; the student will learn to red music, piano fundamentals, ear training, sight reading, scales and chords. The student will continue to build on the fundamental skills as they advance through the grades. After completion of grades 1-3 the student has met the prerequisite to advance to Intermediate Piano: Course A102.

Course - A102 - Intermediate Piano (Grades 4-6) - Prerequisite A101

This course is for students that have met the prerequisite and builds on the foundation of course A101. The student will continue to build on the fundamental skills as they advance through the grades 4-6. After completion of Course A102 the student has met the prerequisite to advance to Advanced Piano: Course A103.

Course - A103 - Advanced Piano (Grades 7-8) – Prerequisite A101, A102

This Course is for students that have met the prerequisites. It is the most advanced levels of piano offered at the school.

Strings

Course – B101 - Elementary Violin - No prerequisite

For beginners; the student will start by learning basic violin fundamentals; learn to read music, ear training, sight reading, and scales. For more advanced learners, the trained tutor will assess the student's level of learned skills and continue to progress toward more complex skills and learning.

Course – B102Viola – No prerequisite

For beginners; the student will start by learning basic viola fundamentals; learn to read music, ear training, sight reading, and scales. For more advanced learners, the trained tutor will assess the student's level of learned skills and continue to progress toward more complex skills and learning.

Course B103 - Cello- No prerequisite

For beginners; the student will start by learning basic cello fundamentals; learn to read music, ear training, sight reading, and scales. This course is designed to meet the student at his/her level of learning and interest. For students just beginning; they will start by learning basic Cello fundamentals, learn to read music (Music Theory), ear training, sight reading, and scales. For more advanced learners, the trained tutor will assess the student's level of learned skills and continue to progress toward more complex skills and learning.

Course B104 - Double Bass- No prerequisite

For beginners; the student will start by learning basic double bass fundamentals; learn to read music, ear training, sight reading, and scales. For more advanced learners, the trained tutor will assess the student's level of learned skills and continue to progress toward more complex skills and learning.

Course C101 Guitar - No prerequisite required

For beginners; the student will start by learning basic guitar fundamentals, ear training, sight reading, posture, simple chords, and introduction to scales. For more advanced or continuing students: they will continue to build on the learned skills.

Voice

Course D101 - Voice- No prerequisite

In this course the student will study singing theory, breathing, reading notes, sight reading, and scales. The student will choose a song to practice with the tutor. Emphasis will be put on the participant's individual vocal work.

Wind

E101 - Recorder - No prerequisite

This is a great introduction course for wind instruments. Students will learn to read notes, play scales, and simple songs. After completion of this course the student will be encouraged to choose a wind instrument to focus on.

E102 - Flute - No prerequisite

For beginners; they will start by learning basic flute fundamentals; learn to read music, ear training, sight reading, and scales. For more advanced learners, the trained tutor will assess the student's level of learned skills and continue to progress toward more complex skills and learning.

Course E103 - Clarinet- No prerequisite

For beginners; they will start by learning basic clarinet fundamentals; learn to read music, ear training, sight reading, and scales. For more advanced learners, the trained tutor will assess the student's level of learned skills and continue to progress toward more complex skills and learning.

Course E104 - Alto Saxophone- No prerequisite

For beginners; they will start by learning basic saxophone fundamentals; learn to read music, ear training, sight reading, and scales. For more advanced learners, the trained tutor will assess the student's level of learned skills and continue to progress toward more complex skills and learning.

Course E105 - Tenor Saxophone- No prerequisite

For beginners; they will start by learning basic saxophone fundamentals; learn to read music, ear training, sight reading, and scales. For more advanced learners, the trained tutor will assess the student's level of learned skills and continue to progress toward more complex skills and learning.

Course F101 – Trumpet - No prerequisite

For beginners; they will start by learning basic trumpet fundamentals; learn to read music, ear training; sight reading, and scales. For more advanced learners, the trained tutor will assess the student's level of learned skills and continue to progress toward more complex skills and learning.

Course F102 Trombone - No prerequisite

For beginners; they will start by learning basic trombone fundamentals; learn to read music, ear training; sight reading, and scales. For more advanced learners, the trained tutor will assess the student's level of learned skills and continue to progress toward more complex skills and learning.

Percussion

G101 – Drumming - No prerequisite

For beginners; they will start by learning how to grip the stick, technique of playing with hands and feet and also co-ordination exercises. Students will learn reading of rhythm patterns, keeping time with beats on the kit, and working with basic drum rudiments with greater concentration on sound control.

G102 - Intermediate Drumming - Prerequisite G101, K101

This course is designed for more advanced students who will be encouraged to pursue the exams for drumming. Theory classes are a prerequisite for this course due to the nature of the exam.

Theory

Course K101 - Musicianship (Theory) - No pre-requisite required for level 1

Musicianship is a 60-minute course that meets at least once a week. The Musicianship Course is made up of 8 grade levels. Each grade level is a three-term course with five major areas of study which are; listening and appraising, theory, sight singing, composition, and improvision. Although there is no prerequisite for level 1, in order to advance to any other level, the student will have to pass an exam. Enrolment for this course only offered in September.

Special Courses

Course B105 - String Orchestra – Audition is required.

String Orchestra is for students between the ages of 10 and 18. There are 2 Orchestras; Primary and Secondary. The Student will be assessed and placed in the appropriate Orchestra and Section.

Course F103 - Concert Band – Audition is required.

Concert Band is for wind and percussion instruments. In order to be a part of the Concert Bank, the student must have their own instrument and must audition for placement. There are 3 levels; beginners, intermediate, and advanced. It is strongly recommended, but not required to be enrolled in a practical course as well.

Course F104 - Jazz Band – Audition is required.

Jazz band is for more advanced students. The student must have their own instrument and must audition for placement. It is strongly recommended, but not required to be enrolled in a practical course as well. Enrollment for this course is only offered in September.
